Action on Gypsy Lane flytipping

by adamboyden on 1 March, 2016

Please see news out today of action on flytipping at Gypsy Lane – http://www.mendip.gov.uk/article/4566/Mendip-cracks-down-on-fly-tippers

Mendip district council is to renew its efforts to identify offenders and reduce the number of fly-tipping incidents in the Gypsy Lane/Dark Lane area.

The council’s press release says “The first step is to introduce an 18-month temporary road closure of Berkley Lane, from the north side of the Pines Residential Site to a point just before the railway bridge before Berkley village. The closure also includes Dark Lane, along its entire length to the junction of Pot Lane. The closure is necessary to stop the criminals accessing the quiet country lanes to dump their rubbish. The closure will come into force on Monday 11th April 2016. Meanwhile, Enforcement Officers will strengthen their patrols in a bid to capture evidence which can lead to successful prosecutions.”

Residents in this area should have by now had a letter from Mendip District Council about the proposed closure of Berkley Lane. Please see here for the MDC letter which explains more: Temp Road Closure Letter (010216). See the proposed diversion route here: Diversion route.

I have had meetings with Mendip officers and other district and Berkley parish councillors on this issue, and Mendip’s work builds on the work done at the public meeting in April 2014 in which I tried to raise awareness in the council and local area on the importance of tackling this issue.

Please let me know if you have any queries or concerns. I am pleased that something at last is happening to tackle this problem, and I hope it works.

The story is covered on the front page of and in depth in the Frome Standard also – see here and here.

Update: People will still be able to walk, cycle or ride a horse here though, as the closure is only for vehicles. It should be a more pleasant experience in future.

Best wishes,

Adam Boyden, Mendip District Councillor, Frome College ward
