Support our motion for recycling and against flytipping (and the causes of flytipping) in Mendip

by adamboyden on 20 September, 2012

Mendip District Council, Full Council meeting 27th September 2012:

The following Motion was submitted by Councillors Adam Boyden and seconded by Councillor Sam Phripp:

“Mendip District Council notes with concern that, since opening hours were cut and new charges introduced at household waste recycling centres across Somerset in April 2011, the number of flytipping incidents has continued to increase across Mendip, at increasing cost to this Council, and recycling at the centres has fallen by a third.  The Council therefore calls upon Somerset Waste Partnership, at its next meeting, to review and extend the opening hours, and reduce or remove charges introduced in April 2011, as these are having counter-productive effects on flytipping, on recycling levels, and on Mendip’s environment.

It is also acknowledged that the Council started work towards better enforcement against flytipping incidents in autumn 2011, but it remains a concern that no enforcement action has yet been taken against flytippers.  The Council regrets the lack of enforcement action to date, and restates its commitment to implementing a stronger flytipping enforcement strategy as a matter of urgency.”

The motion will be debated at the Full Council meeting at Mendip’s offices, Cannards Grave Road, Shepton Mallet on Thursday 27th September 2012. The meeting starts at 6.30pm.
