Speed limit reduction on Oldford Hill cancelled

by adamboyden on 17 December, 2013

Somerset Highways have informed me that their recent proposal to lower the speed limit on Oldford Hill, just to the north of the Bath Road/Gypsy Lane/Cuckoo Lane junction has been cancelled.

This is really disappointing. This was due to the opposition to an increase in speed limit at Oldford, which was also proposed in the same Draft Speed Limit Order, but I still await an explanation of why the speed reduction (which I do not think raised any objections) had to be cancelled as well.  I have also been told that there is no funding available to pursue any further speed limit reductions this financial year (to end March 2013), but that speed monitoring will be undertaken.

The Somerset Highways officer responsible is now on leave until the end of January.  I will meet the officer and county councillor when they are next available, and will pursue the speed limit reduction until it happens, to make this part of Frome safer.

This is important. Residents living in and around Bath Road, and who use the Bath Road/Oldford Hill/ Gypsy Lane/ Cuckoo Lane junction, tell me that the speed limit of vehicles coming into (and leaving) Frome needs to be reduced to make the junction and Bath Road (which has Frome Community College on one side and the new Bath Road Heights development site on the other) safer. There was a fatal accident at the junction a few years ago. I do not want to see another.

  1. […] Oldford Hill-Bath Road speed limit reduction cancelled: I was really disappointed to learn recently that Somerset County Council’s Highways department have cancelled their proposed reduction of the speed limit on Oldford Hill. As I know residents in this area are concerned about the speed of traffic coming into (and leaving) Frome on Oldford Hill and Bath Road. But I will continue to push for the speed limit to be reduced here. See here for details: http://adamboyden.mycouncillor.org.uk/2013/12/17/speed-limit-reduction-on-oldford-hill-cancelled/ […]
