Housing plan for old Mendip Lodge Hotel site withdrawn, again!

by adamboyden on 24 February, 2014

Earlier this month, the planning application for 14 houses at ‘Bath Road Heights’, phase 2 of the redevelopment of the former Mendip Lodge Hotel site, opposite Frome Community College, were withdrawn by Latona Leisure.

The planning application submitted to Mendip District Council last autumn was for 14 new 3, 4 and 5 bedroom houses on the corner of Bath Road and Cuckoo Lane, reference 2013/1889 – see here.

I had asked Somerset Highways and Mendip’s planning team to ensure that the development provides a new pedestrian crossing across Bath Road, and associated improvements, to allow pedestrians to cross the busy Bath Road to walk into Frome or get to the College on foot safely.  A Section 106 agreement was agreed for the previous outline planning application, ref. 056194/017 (March 2008) which required a bus layby, footpath and pedestrian crossing to be built, but those plans were not built and the agreement was not triggered.  I understand Somerset Highways did support a requirement on the new phase 2 planning application to provide the same improvements as were required before.

Meanwhile, the development of 6 new houses in the first phase of development at Bath Road Heights, is nearly complete.  Residents have also complained about the poor state of the phase 2 site corner plot, which is an eyesore, so I am taking this up with Mendip’s enforcement team and the landowners’ agents.
