Mendip Lib Dems regret Danny Unwin’s defection to the Conservatives

by adamboyden on 21 October, 2015

Danny Unwin (Mendip District Councillor, Wells St Thomas, and a former leader of the Lib Dem group at Mendip) was re-elected time after time on a Liberal Democrat platform and gained a reputation for challenging and opposing Conservative policies.

We are disappointed that he has chosen to join the Conservatives, but hope he will take on the role of ‘critical friend’ and try to effect changes from within the Tory ranks.

Over the years, there have been defections by Councillors of all parties. It’s never easy, but as a team of ten, we are as determined as ever and will continue to offer strong, positive and effective opposition at Mendip District Council.

At this week’s Full Council, we are doing just that.  The Lib Dems have proposed that the Council:

  1. improves its transparency when making planning decisions
  2. protects and safeguards the vulnerable – local people facing financial difficulties and those with children – when it collects Council Tax

The next three and a half years will be a major test of Danny’s influence over his new Conservative colleagues.  The Lib Dems have consistently called on all Councillors, regardless of party allegiance, to join forces and vote for proposals which will improve the lives of those who live and work within the Mendip District and we will continue to do so in the public interest. Danny’s change of political colours does not change that at all.

The Frome Standard story on this is here.
