Old Showfield survey

Since Frome Town Council took over the Old Showfield in 2015, there have been many changes. The Town Council is now updating the Management and Improvement Plan.

As one of your ward councillors, I want to know what you think of the changes and proposals, and if anything else needs doing.

Survey questions

Since Frome Town Council took over the Old Showfield in 2015, there have been many changes:

  • improvements to all the path surfaces
  • cutting the large area of grass shorter
  • an outdoor gym, and training sessions
  • more seats, litter bins, and new noticeboards
  • more trees, including a community orchard
  • repairs to the playground, new surfacing, and a fence partly around it
  • last year’s fireworks display and Apple Day events

1. Do you approve of the changes to the Old Showfield?

The Town Council is now updating the Management and Improvement Plan, which proposes:

  • getting a Parkrun up and running
  • planting more trees
  • more seating, and better signage;
  • additional children’s play equipment (with £25,000 from a local housing development)

    As mentioned on the survey I think the two big issues that need to be addressed with the old showfield are: 1.) drainage, ditches, & culverts; and 2.) dog poo! I love these fields and the improvements that have done. But these two things are essential to the overall well-being of the fields and those that use them. All of the ditches and culverts need to be maintained more frequently, particularly at the top of the first 2 fields. This would surely help there to be better drainage in the fields. And the other issue of people not picking up their dog’s poo is a long standing issue that really needs to be addressed. After the snow the fields were full of it! More bins, good signage, and providing poo bags dispensers might help: https://www.hartlepool.gov.uk/news/article/1188/council_to_install_new_dog_waste_bag_dispensers

    There is a major issue with drainage on the site, while Lorraine Fish is quite right about maintaining the ditches the Field is often waterlogged in winter.

    I suggest that advice from a land drainage expert is needed
