Climate emergency declared

by adamboyden on 27 March, 2019

Liberal Democrat councillors have recently led and supported resolutions at Somerset and Mendip councils against fracking and single use plastics, and to declare a ‘climate emergency’. Climate change is a threat to our civilisation and the natural world.

In 2016 I asked Mendip to join other councils and promote energy conservation and reduce emissions, but this led to nothing due to a lack of staff time and any support from the ruling Conservatives, and because the Government defunded the ‘Climate Local’ initiative that we got Mendip to sign up to.

The Liberal Democrats are committed to taking meaningful action on climate change and invest in renewable energy, reduce plastic waste, biodiversity loss and other environmental challenges. I want to see investment in electric cars and roof based solar panels. We have to take action now to take care of our planet in future.

  1. Whilst the environmental principle of changing to electric cars may appear to be the right thing to do, it can only be a practical option when –

    a) there is enough electricity available from the grid to charge them during peak periods –

    b) there are enough electric points in service areas, fuel stations, car parks, shopping centres and outside private houses to allow charging achieving reasonable travel distances –

    c) in winter months a sufficient range per full charge is available to permit reasonable travel distances with the heating applied within the car during the journey –

    d) the purchase prices of electric cars is equivalent to or less than petrol or diesel cars.

When all these and other practical issues are resolved then electric cars may be an option for consideration!!!!!!!!!
