May news

by adamboyden on 20 May, 2019

Dear all, as one of your local councillors I need to keep you up to date on local matters, so please see below…

“Deeds not words” – Mendip moves forward with Lib Dems at the helm:
The first meeting of the new Mendip District Council was held on Monday 20th May at the Bath & West Showground. This is what the first Lib Dem leader of Mendip in 16 years says she will do.

Please see here our statement of intent, and see here for details of who is who in the new council, with some words from the new Council leader Ros Wyke.

The agenda here was mainly about selecting who will fill the various main roles at the council this year. I am part of the Lib Dem group who won 22 of the 47 seats and is forming an administration with help from independent councillors. I have been appointed a Cabinet Assistant for the new portfolio of Strategic Policy and Climate Change, and will also sit on the Audit Committee and a few other things. Please let me know if you have any questions. We have work to do.

European elections:
The meeting was not held at Mendip’s council chamber due to the European elections taking place on Thursday. Please do not forget to vote. The polls open at 7am and are held at your usual polling station. You get one vote, and MEPs are elected under a proportional representation system – please see here for details.
In March, Mendip’s Cabinet approved a notional contingency fund of up to £200,000 to support the community and business resilience in case of significant hardship and/or disruption to local communities and the economy as a result of Brexit – please see here.
The Lib Dems are now 2nd in the opinion polls – please see for more on our candidates and campaign.

Frome Town Council meeting:
I attended the first meeting of the new Frome Town Council last week – please see here. We heard from the Principal of Frome Community College and found out who Frome’s new mayor is. I said I look forward to helping the new Mendip forming a stronger working relationship with Frome Town Council.

Saxonvale planning application submitted:
The planning application for the regeneration of the Saxonvale site has just been submitted. Please see here for the application details. There will be much analysis and discussion on this in weeks to come.

Cidery planning application: Some 124 public comments have been received on the planning application (see here) – 94 objections and 30 in support, and several consultees and officers have responded (see here). Frome Town Council has objected. I have asked for the application to be determined by the Planning Board. New Planning Board members will receive training and the next Board will meet in mid June. I will update everyone when a decision has been made whether to take it to the Board, and how to have your say.

Frome Medical Practice open meeting, Weds 5th June:
“Want to share your experiences? Want to find out more on what is happening at your GP practice?…” – Frome Medical Practice are holding an Open Meeting on Wednesday 5th June at 6.30-8.00pm. Please go along to have your say on your experiences at the practice and hear what is happening. Please see here for details, and here for previous news.

The next Frome Business Breakfast on 5th June could save you energy and reduce your business’ environmental impact – here.

BBC Question Time is coming to Frome’s Merlin Theatre tomorrow Thursday 23rd May – the panellists are here. Do let me know if you are going!

Please let me know if you have any queries or concerns that I or cllr Drew Gardner can help with.

Best wishes,

Adam Boyden
