Improve our green spaces – get in touch!

by adamboyden on 18 June, 2011

That people have access to local green spaces is so important for our physical and mental wellbeing as well as our environment. In this part of Frome, we do have a number of good local green spaces and playgrounds within easy reach of where people live, including the Old Showground, but some smaller areas seem under used by the community and in need of attention.

Mendip District Council will soon be working on new strategies for playgrounds, and green spaces in Frome, and on a new contract to maintain them.  When work begins on these I will keep people updated.  A local group (FROGS, see weblinks on the right) has started to make an inventory of green spaces and to identify potential improvements that could be made.  Frome Town Council is also responsible for other parks and open spaces in Frome, and is working with FROGS on a Lottery bid to improve the green space and play areas in the nearby Welshmill area.

I and others want to make sure that the Councils understand what local people want from our open spaces, and work with local people to protect, improve and better manage them, for everyone in the community.   Please get in touch with your ideas, such as which spaces should be protected as they are, and which need work, investment, a change of use or different management, to improve their value for people and wildlife. This will really make a difference as it will help guide future strategies towards local needs and concerns at an early stage.
