Letter to Somerset Standard – Showfield security, dogs and children

by adamboyden on 7 February, 2013

My letter to Someset Standard, 7 February 2013:
“I am pleased to report that, after residents expressed concerns about the security of the old Showfield (to me as one of the ward councillors, and in this paper in January), a meeting was held soon after between officers of Mendip District Council and the Frome & District Agricultural Society, and then with the Health Centre (Pentagon) and their contractors, to agree how to
make the site more secure against unauthorised vehicle access. I am more pleased to report that agreement was reached quickly, that the fence has been reinstated, and that suitable barriers are to be erected asap to secure the site while allowing room for pedestrians, pushchairs, mobility scooters and wheelchairs along the paths. Thanks to residents for raising this issue with me.

From talking to some parents recently I am also aware that some dogs off lead and away from their owners can sometimes worry children and have even knocked over some toddlers, with some parents and children now avoiding the area. I want everyone, dog walkers and children alike, to enjoy this area fully. I hope to see the improvements plan (funded by the impressive new Health Centre) which is now being worked out, address this problem to some extent with some changes to the site, more signs to help educate site users, and a fence around the playground. But we also need to encourage dog owners to be responsible (and I think most are) and remember to keep their dogs under control even when off the lead, especially around children, and to always clear up after their dog.  I also hope to see more frequent visits by Mendip’s dog warden to raise awareness. If anyone would like to help with or comment on these issues please contact me on cllr.boyden@mendip.gov.uk.

Adam Boyden
Liberal Democrat Mendip District Councillor, Frome College ward”
