I and Councillor Claire Hudson submitted a motion to Mendip District Council to ask that Mendip publicly congratulates Frome Town Council and the people of Frome on Frome’s 2 national awards, ‘Star Council’ and ‘Best Town’, at its next full council meeting on 14th December.
Update 17 December: It is good news that Mendip district councillors agreed to congratulate Frome at the full council meeting on Monday. Cllrs Claire Hudson and Damon Hooton (Lib Dem, Frome Park ward) took the motion forward as I could not attend the meeting in person. Congratulations Frome!
The motion is as follows:
‘Motion on congratulating the people of Frome, and Frome Town Council
The Council notes that Frome recently won the Academy of Urbanism’s Urbanism Award for ‘Best Town’, and that this gives national recognition to places that have demonstrated innovation and excellence in all aspects of urban life.
The Council also notes that Frome Town Council has been announced as the winner of the first National Association of Local Councils Star Councils 2015 ‘Star Council of the Year’ award, as well as runner up in the ‘Council Project of the Year’ award for the work of their Energy and Recycling Officer, and that NALC’s awards aim to recognise the effective hard work carried out by parish councils with their communities and celebrate their achievements.
The Council also notes that the Frome Independent market, which was originally launched by this council in partnership with Frome Town Council and St Catherine’s Artisan Market in 2012, was a Runner Up for Best Market in the national Observer Food Monthly Awards 2015.
The Council congratulates Frome Town Council and the people of Frome on these awards, which are a credit to the initiative, hard work and success of many organisations and individuals over many years, including everyone who has supported the town and made it what it is today.
The Council notes that these awards bring national acclaim to Mendip, as well as Frome, and that this Council has had a key supporting role over many years in relation to several aspects of the awards, including heritage conversation, planning and development, and in setting up the Frome Independent Market.
The Council will continue to work with Frome Town Council and all other city, town and parish councils to achieve our shared goals of improving the quality of life for all our residents. The Council requests that the Chief Executive write to Frome Town Council to congratulate them on their success.
