The future of the Old Showground

by adamboyden on 29 June, 2011

Construction of the new super-Surgery at the Old Showfield is due to start soon. This will mean a new and improved surgery next to Frome Community Hospital, including to replace the current Frome Medical Practice surgery in Park Road, the Saffron Surgery in Berkley Road and the Fromefield Surgery.

The recent application by the FROGS volunteer group to the county council to designate the remainder of the Old Showfield as a Village or Town Green under the Commons Act, is now being consulted on. See http://www.thisissomerset.co.uk/Bid-make-field-village-green/story-12782657-detail/story.html and http://www.fromefrogs.org/

Up to 2007, Mendip District Council led a Steering Group to involve the landowner (Frome and District Agricultural Society), council officers and councillors, all other interested parties and local residents (including the local group HOOF – Hands Off Our Fields) in discussions and decisions related to the new hospital development and other changes to the Old Showfield.

With so much happening concerning the Showfield, I am keen to find a way of moving things forward constructively between the various parties and the people that use the Showfield. This might mean a setting up a new improved Steering Group, a liaison committee and/or ‘Friends’ group, depending on what people want and what support the Councils (both Town and District) can give.  I and others will be discussing with District Council officers and would be interested to hear ideas from anyone to help – please contact me with any ideas or for more information.
