Another letter to the Somerset Standard, 10 November 2011: bus chaos, car parking charges and our town centre trade

by adamboyden on 21 December, 2011

Dear Editor,

I have to agree with John Boxall last week about the county council not notifying bus companies of the road works that disrupted the 267 and 234 buses the other week. I am still waiting for a proper explanation but think it was a comedy of errors that led to chaos for 3 days with full buses turned away from Stonebridge, and passengers left stranded. I was shocked, and this is even after having successfully argued for the junction to remain open during Monday morning rush hour, and after pleading with Somerset Highways, the contractors and bus operators to talk to each other. I ended up putting unofficial warnings up at bus stops, as no one else was going to.

If anyone else was affected and wants answers, please let me know. Also this week I and other Lib Dem councillors are asking Mendip Council’s ruling Cabinet to rethink their proposed increase in car park charges in mid December, as it is an unwanted Christmas present to our town centres and will not help the town compete for business. We are arguing that car park charges need a review and consultation before being increased yet again. Hundreds who signed our petition on Saturday agree. We will see if sense prevails.

Adam Boyden, Lib Dem Mendip District Councillor, Frome College ward.
