How you can help clear snow and ice: join Snow Patrol and follow the Snow Code

How you can help!

Mendip District Council senior officers have now also agreed that the Council can work with volunteers to clear snow or ice, and lay grit safely.  Where community volunteers are willing to assist they should contact Peter Brook, Mendip’s engineer, who is acting as a conduit across the District to, where appropriate, link volunteers with Mendip’s contractors (The Landscape Group).

So if anyone can help Mendip’s contractors clear and grit town centre car parks, please contact Mendip’s engineer Peter Brook, who would coordinate work, by email to peter.brook@mendip.gov.uk  with your details and availability.

The Frome Snow Patrol is a group of volunteers who work together to clear snow and grit paths in areas not covered by the county council. I have put Frome’s Snow Patrol coordinator (local resident Leslie Stather) in touch with Peter at Mendip and hope to help by joining up all the right people.  Please see the http://www.frome-tc.gov.uk/winter-services and contact Leslie on 0778 6612365 if you:

– can help volunteer some time to clear snow locally on residential roads and paths;

– can help clear the town centre; and

– can help coordinate other volunteers; or

– need help clearing snow and cannot do it yourself.

 Do the right thing, follow the Snow Code

Follow the advice here – and help clear snow and ice from paths safely and effectively: http://www.frome-tc.gov.uk/winter-services

Don’t be put off clearing paths safely – and don’t believe the urban myth as it is unlikely people clearing paths safely with a spade and grit/salt would be held responsible for any injuries if the path has been cleared carefully.

The main rule is Never Use Hot Water – this will freeze and make it more slippery!

To request a grit bin from the town council for your area, please also follow the link http://www.frome-tc.gov.uk/winter-services to an application form.
