Running the Frome 5k

by adamboyden on 19 July, 2013

‘Mad dogs and Englishmen’ comes to mind, but …

I am going to run the Frome 5k ‘fun run’ this Sunday 21st July, in the late morning sun, alongside my wife (who started running with a local running club recently). It’s part of the 2nd Frome Half Marathon and 10k event – http://fromehalfmarathon.co.uk/ – which hundreds are taking part in (I am not up to longer distances yet, but hopefully next year …).

We thought it would be fun. In this heat and with a bit of bad back (I am getting my excuses in early), it now looks like a bit more of a challenge!  I am thinking of fancy dress, so if anyone has any ideas, (or a spare running superhero costume to hand) please let me know!

My chosen charities are Carers UK and the Rotary Club of Frome, so if anyone can and would like to sponsor us, whatever amount, please go to the following websites:

or

I chose Carers UK as I was once a carer (with my Mum) for my late father who became ill in the early 1990s in Enfield, London, and eventually needed 24/7 care at home, after having severe rheumatoid arthritis most of his life (although he managed to have a good and active life up until then). I remember that support and time off for carers can really help the person being looked after, as it helps the carers and the whole family cope better. This is my first charity run of any sort since 1988 Sport Aid 10k, and I wanted to raise money for a perhaps unsung group of heroes. Carers UK website is http://www.carersuk.org/support

There is a local branch, Carers UK East Somerset, who I have asked are passed any funds I raise, and also a local Frome and District Carers Group.

The Rotary Club of Frome work hard to raise funds for many charities and good causes locally, and are one of the event’s official charities, supporting a Legacy for Junior Athletics in Frome – please see https://www.rotary-ribi.org/clubs/homepage.php?ClubID=1208).

Thank you, Adam Boyden

UPDATE 31 July 2013: Thanks to everyone who has donated! My justgiving page has taken £85.00 plus over £20 giftaid for Carers UK online and I have added £45 offline donations. See http://www.justgiving.com/Adam-Boyden.  I have agreed with the national Carers UK HQ that 50% of this will go to the local group (East Somerset, which covers Frome and the Mendip area as well as Castle Cary, Bruton and Wincanton).  This website is http://www.carersukeastsomerset.org/, which sets out what they spend any donations on.  Thanks again.

More will be added shortly to the Frome Rotary page.
