Focus: Conserving and improving the old Showfield

by adamboyden on 22 November, 2013

The old Showfield is the most important public open space in this part of Frome, used by dogwalkers, as a traffic free route into town and to the health park, and by children playing or walking to school. Recently I was pleased to help Mendip agree to transfer the leases to Frome Town Council, as this should mean that the land will be managed more in line with what local people want. The transfer is progressing and needs to be agreed by the landowner.

I am also asking the Town Council to consult local people on their plans to spend the £40,000 fund for improvements (paid for by the Health Centre development), so you can have your say on the specific plan.

The Town Council and Vision 4 Frome consulted local people in autumn 2012 and identified some priorities. The current scheme includes for resurfacing and improving footpaths, a kickabout pitch, outdoor adult gym equipment, and more seats and trees. The Town Council would also keep some areas of grass shorter to allow picnics. Mendip might also be able to provide funds for play equipment through the new district Play Strategy.

I am still arguing for a new fence to be provided around the playground, to keep dogs away from children (and vice versa!), as I know this is also a priority for many people.

I am also pressing for ditches to be cleared to prevent path flooding, and encourage everyone to clear up after their dog, as “there is no such thing as the dog poo fairy”!

See here and here for previous news about the old Showfield.
